I write beginning chapter books for children ages 6-9. My first beginning chapter book, Danny, Phil, and Friends: The Soccer Game, is written at a 2nd grade level. It is written with basic sentence structure, age appropriate vocabulary, and a few higher level words to help grow a child's working vocabulary.

Beginning chapter books are plot driven, easy to follow, and have simple character development. They are high-interest, readable stories perfect for children beginning to read longer text or for reluctant readers capable of reading longer text but not yet showing interest or patience. The Soccer Game has seven full page illustrations to help the reader visualize the story.

This book was written for the reluctant readers of Fischer Elementary School who get themselves involved in some rather intense recess soccer games. It will be available in early 2014.

About the Illustrator

Kathleen Spale, a graduate of Academy of Art University in San Francisco, has loved drawing and painting for as long as she can remember. Over the years, she has created artwork for everything from gallery shows to personal commissions, although her greatest passion is creating artwork for children's books. When not illustrating, Kathleen resides and works as a librarian near Chicago.

Next Book

When I was a kid, I was heckled in Wrigley Field for refusing to eat a hot dog because it had mustard on it. As an adult, a cashier in a Chicago hot dog stand began arguing with me when I ordered my hot dog with ketchup. The Ketchup Club is a beginning chapter book that tackles the issue of whether or not it is okay to put ketchup on hot dogs. Spoiler alert: I think it is okay to put ketchup on hot dogs. I am in the revising stage of writing, and this book will be available in 2016.
